I teach a class of 6 students, ages 5 and 6 who have autism in a public school in New York. My students are non verbal and display many behaviors that imply that they are having trouble regulating themselves. Each student has their own specific sensory need that needs to be met in order for them to be able to focus and remain on task throughout their school day. I have students who are unable to sit for more then a few minutes without getting up. A student who places their fingers in their ears because they are so sensitive to sound, a student who lays on the floor because they need the input of the hard cold floor, but will cringe when a teacher hugs them, and a student who will put anything in his mouth; crayons, pencils, paper, erasers, etc.
