I work on the 9th grade campus at an urban school close to the border of East Oakland. Our student body is as diverse as it gets in the bay area: Latino, African American, Asian, Pacific Islander, Caucasian, and more. My 9th graders are faced with the challenge of entering a school in its 3rd year of Program Improvement and during a time when budget cuts are the norm. Anyone who has been to high school knows that 9th graders are the puppies of high school - wild and woolly, they are enthusiastic about this new world they have entered. And I get to have the best time with them because in my class they get to travel anywhere our literature takes them...
