My first grade class consists of 23 students ages 6-8. Our school is a public elementary school in a mid-sized city in Oregon. Students in my classroom come from middle to lower income families. Many come to school without breakfast or sleeping well the night before. Sixty percent of the school is on free or reduced lunch. Although their parents try hard, they have to work several jobs or are unable to find work at all. They spend much of their time at home watching TV or playing video games. Half of my class is reading below grade level, six must see a language specialist, and three are hard of hearing. Each student loves to read, especially with an adult. They are exceptionally good at math. They also love to talk, sing and dance. Every student in my class wants to learn, but there are so many obstacles for them to overcome already.
