The children in my second grade class are a charming bunch. They attend an urban K-8 school in their neighborhood made up of many cultures and religions. Many of the students in our school receive free or reduced lunch as well as breakfast. Some of the children have special needs, since it is an inclusion classroom. They each have their own special qualities, strengths, and weaknesses. There are many different levels of learners in my classroom which is why differentiation is so important. The higher level students will be challenged, while the lower level will receive extra help with the task at hand. For some of my children this is the only place they get to be exposed to written text (books, magazines, and computer). As a first year teacher, I walked into a barren classroom. I purchased the necessities but it is still not enough to ensure that my students improve their literacy, math, social studies and science skills.
