Hands-on is minds-on! Research has shown that children learn by applying all their senses in the world. Therefore when you combine reading activities through talking, listening, and manipulating objects, children's minds are activated with curiosity and become engaged.
The requested materials will enhance my first graders reading comprehension skills by creating a "Reading Comprehension Construction Kit".
They will use the pencil box to store the materials needed to build and explain reading components during independent reading time. The Reading Comprehension Construction Kits will include building blocks (legos), craft sticks with velcro and with magnet coins attach, pattern blocks, and dominos. Each material will be use for a specific comprehension skill.
The use of building blocks (legos) will target "retelling". Students will retell the important story events in order from beginning to end. Students will stack up six legos, one lego at a time as they share each event.
The use of dominoes is to target "cause and effect". Students will use two dominoes to explain the cause, and push the cause dominoes to explain the effect.
The pattern blocks targets "character traits" and "author's purpose". Students will describe and explain a character from the story by sharing six traits using six triangles to create a hexagon. Students will also use one hexagon and three rhombus pattern blocks to state the author's purpose and explain how the author persuades, informs, and entertains.
Lastly, the use of craft sticks will be use to "compare and contrast" topics and share the "main idea" with supporting details. Students will stick two craft sticks using the magnets together to explain the similiarities, and then pull the magnets apart to tell how the topics are different.
The Reading Comprehension Construction Kits are simple, but effective for students to learn, apply, and enhance comprehension skills hands-on!
