My darling bunch of kindergartners attend a Title 1 school in a culturally and socio-economically diverse area. Due to this diversity, my students enter kindergarten with various levels of academic and social readiness for school. Only 20% of my students passed the kindergarten pre-screening test this year. Most of my students are already at a disadvantage when they first walk through the classroom door due to their low socio-economic status. While students who live in more affluent areas have exposures to academic and extracurricular activities, my students are not afforded that luxury. Most of my students receive very little academic and social support from home because often both parents work or the parents themselves are unable to help their children due to a language or educational barrier.
