My students are a wonderful group of 5th graders. They are a diverse representation of several countries and 8 languages. 88% of my students are bilingual and have a language other than English spoken in their homes. Almost all of my students qualify for free or reduced lunch.
There are many reasons why my students would be considered to be "at-risk." They come from homes with low socioeconomic status, they are English Language Learners, and the majority of them have need for intensive reading interventions. It is beautiful, however, to see that what they lack in resources they make up for in personality! My class is friendly and supportive of each other. My students come to school every day. They want to learn and succeed, and given the right opportunities I know they will!
