I teach English Language Development to immigrant students in grades 6 through 8. My students have been in this country anywhere from 2 weeks to 3 years. They come from various language backgrounds speaking Cantonese, Mandarin, Spanish, Arabic, Vietnamese, Thai, Portuguese, Amharic, and Hindi. It is my job to help them acquire English as soon as possible so that they can successfully graduate high school in a few years and move onto higher education.
The class can be especially challenging since new students arrive throughout the school year. When newcomers come, they need to adjust to an entirely new educational system, learn the English language, and catch up with all the content learning they might have missed previously.
A full 88% of the students in school are on free or reduced price lunch. Despite all of their challenges, students and families have high hopes for their future. They, more than anyone else, deserve the very best.
